Wellsford testing continues

No further cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed in Wellsford after four patients tested positive at the Wellsford Health Centre early last week.

However, Coast to Coast Health spokesperson Dr Tim Malloy emphasised this morning that there was at present a delay between tests being conducted and the medical practice being notified of positive results.

This meant those who were tested in the last few days were not necessarily free of Covid-19, unless they had received notification of a negative test result.

Anyone who had been tested but had not had a negative test result should be in self-isolation.

Dr Malloy said that the number of people presenting for testing at the temporary Community Based Assessment Centre (CBAC), located in the car park of the Wellsford Health Centre, had reduced in recent days, particularly over the weekend.

He said it was impossible to draw any conclusions from the fact that he was unaware of any new cases of Covid-19.

“We are a long way from being out of the woods. You can’t read anything into such small numbers,” he said.

The CBAC covered the area between Warkworth and the Brynderwyns, and was currently testing between 10 and 30 people each day.

Dr Malloy said at this stage, the CBAC was coping well with the numbers presenting. As long as this continued, it was unlikely that there would be a need for another proposed CBAC facility in Morrison Drive, Warkworth.

Speaking more generally about healthcare in the current crisis, Dr Malloy said he was grateful for the level of community cooperation in the current difficult climate.

He said most Coast to Coast consultations were being done by telephone and smaller clinics at Paparoa and Matakana had closed.

However, clinics at Wellsford, Mangawhai and Maungaturoto continued to operate. People could visit the clinics, if necessary, but would be screened, before being allowed to enter, to assess their Covid-19 risk.

Patients suspected of having Covid-19 would be directed to Wellsford for testing.
